The club was founded in 1953, originally as a section of the Ingatestone Social Club, but it later became independent and changed to meeting at the Parish Rooms.
Our program runs from September to May. It comprises a mixture of talks, demonstrations and competitions. The Annual Exhibition is held in late April when all the awards and trophies are presented to members successful in the various competitions. Besides the Annual Exhibition, the Club also exhibits each year at the Ingatestone & Fryerning Horticultural Show at the Seymour Field. In recent years, further exhibitions have been mounted in the St. Edmund & St. Mary Church, on Essex Heritage and environmental issues, and regular showcases of our work in Ingatestone Library.
If you are a beginner to photography and have not previously been a member of a photographic society, you will find the competition evenings of value by virtue of the independent judge's comments and appraisal given to every entry. Have no fear of entering. Maybe your pictures are heavily criticised at first, but learn from that criticism and very soon your photography will improve.
It is not necessary for people contemplating membership of the Club to be proficient in photography, but we trust that by joining, you will progress in the art and craft of picture taking. You will certainly do so - over a period of time. Although there is no systematic or formal teaching, lectures on specific subjects can sometimes be arranged. Please feel free to get to know other members and ask for advice about anything you need to know. Several members hold photographic distinctions so someone should be able to answer your queries!
The majority of our members were only introduced to the hobby of photography through joining the Club. The most popular
medium used is transparency but a small group of members do produce their own prints in both colour and monochrome.
Contrary to expectations, monochrome is the most popular medium for home printing and can be most effective in producing an evocative mood that can be missing in colour prints.
